Abstract

Geniposideis the main iridoid glucoside extracted from the dried fruits of Gardenia jasminoides. The effects of geniposide on acute jaundice in rats caused by ig heavy dose (100 mg/kg) of alpha-naphthylisothiocyanate (ANIT) were examined. The results demonstrated that geniposide lowered significantly the serum belirubin, GPT and GOT previously elevated by the hapatotoxin. In addition, histopathological findings showed that geniposide also had a protective effect on hepatic parenchymal cells. The best dosage of geniposide for healing was 70 mg/kg, while heavier doses of geniposide cuased an irreversible liver damage on the acute-poisoned rats.
