Effect of the central action of propranolol on coronary circulation in dogs

Abstract

In conscious dogs synchronized EEG pattern was demonstrated after intravenous(iv) or intracerebroventricular(icv) injections of dl-propranolol(dl-p),showing decreases of wave frequency and predominance of high amplitude slow waves. This suggests that dl-p blocked the beta-recetors in CNS. Dextroisomer(d-p),however, lacked such a central effect. In aneasthetized dogs the coronary blood flow was significantly decreased by both iv and icv dl-p, but d-p in neither routes showed significant effects. The possible relation between the central and coronary circulatory effects of dl-p was suggested.
