Cytotoxic effect of carcinophotorin plus red light on human liver cancer cells in vitro

Qian Peng, De-Hua He, Wu-Yang Zhang, Rong-Chun Dong

Abstract

The morphological changes of human hepatocarcinoma cells cultivated in vitro after treatment with carcinophotorin (10 Ug/ml) plus red light (3 J/cm2) were observed under the optic microscope to identify the vitality of the treated cells. The cells were swollen, with cytoplasmic blebs. There were large and small vacuoles in the mitochondria. The rough endoplasmic reticulum were degranulated and dilatated. Vesicles of cytoplasmic membrane were formed as the sizes and numbers of normal microvilli were reduced. The condensed hetero-chromatin seemed to aggregate at the nuclear membrane. Finally, the injured cells were disintegrated.
