Cover: Mechanism(s) of tissue protection by erythropoietin (EPO). When EPO binds to EPO receptor (EPOR), it causes dimerization of the receptor, activation of Janus-tyrosine-kinase-2 (JAK-2). JAK-2 activation leads to activation of Ras-mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK), phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase/protein kinase B (PI3K/Akt) and the transcription factor signal transducers and activators of transcription-5 (STAT-5) resulting in inhibition of apoptosis, attenuation of inflammatory responses and augmentation of restorative functions, including recruitment of stem cells.
